Formosan Monkey Eats Coffee

Talk about turning a bad scenario into a good one. Instead of the Formosan monkeys ruining the coffee crops by eating the ripest coffee berries, they evidently make these better. In Taiwan, coffee farmers are producing a rare “gourmet” coffee by harvesting and roasting half-chewed beans from the monkeys who spit them out. They claim it produces a sweeter coffee with a vanilla scent and are selling it at around $56 per pound (450g). Not quite as radical as the civet cats from Indonesia that “enhance” coffee by fully digesting it. Who knew collecting cat droppings or regurgitated coffee beans spit up by monkeys could be so profitable. It boggles my mind.
